Sprouting Red Lenils

Day 1.   Oct 24, 2018

Red lentils from Winco (grocery store)    Cheese cloth from Fred Meyer.   You can get sprouting lids for jars, or spend as much money as you want… this was a cheap way to get started.   As directed below, we soaked them overnight in filtered water… at least we hope that stuff we buy and drink was filtered.

How to sprout red lentils:

  1. Fill a mason jar 1/3 of the way with the lentils, then fill the rest of the jar with filtered water. Let the lentils soak for about 6-8 hours. I usually set this up before bed and let it soak overnight.
  2. After the lentils have soaked pour out the water.
  3. Rinse lentils and pour the water out again. Turn jar upside down and rest it in a bowl or dish so that the water is allowed to drain out of the mesh screen. Repeat this process of rinsing and leaving it to drain about every 6-8 hours or at least 2 times a day for 2-3 days.

Went to Fred Meyers to get Alfalfa seeds for sprouting… didn’t have any.   So thought we would try Red Lentils.

Day 2,  October 25.   (below)  Morning,  then evening

Can’t tell much difference.   We will keep watching it grow.

Day 4  Oct 27 (below)  Morning and evening.

Day 6  Oct 29 (below)  Morning and evening. (I’m getting impatient)

Day 8 October 31 (below)  Morning and evening.   I almost think its too cold to sprout this time of year.

As you can see, I did not have good success.  So, at this point I abandoned my project.

Next I will try ALFALFA.  The old stand by.   Much higher chance of success… stay tuned for an article of sprouting alfalfa.
